Welcome to Cat Go, the feline strategy game where you face Emmy, a brilliant grey ticked tabby AI named after legendary mathematician Emmy Noether!

1. Board & Color Assignment

Go is played on grid intersections (line crossings).
Black always plays first. Player color assignments are randomly chosen at the start of each game.
Look at the scoreboard badges to confirm whether you or Emmy are playing as Black 🟤 or White ⚪!

2. Stones & Liberties

Each stone (equipped with cute cat pawprints!) is placed on an empty intersection.
Liberties: Intersections directly connected horizontally or vertically to a stone or chain of stones are called liberties.
Stones of the same color connected along grid lines form a single continuous group sharing liberties.

3. How Capturing Works (Zero Liberties)

Atari (Danger!): When an enemy group has only 1 liberty remaining, it is in Atari and vulnerable to capture.
Capturing: Placing your stone on the last open liberty reduces the enemy group to 0 liberties. The entire captured group is pounced on, removed from the board, and added to your Prisoner count (+1 point each)!
Suicide Rule: You cannot place a stone on an intersection where your group would have 0 liberties, unless that move immediately captures enemy stones to gain liberties.

4. How Claiming Territory Works (Enclosing Space)

Surrounding Territory: Think of your stones like a perimeter or fence. Any empty intersections completely walled off and enclosed by your stones belong to your territory!
Using Edges & Corners: The board edges act as natural walls! Building territory in corners and along edges requires fewer stones than in the open center.
Two Eyes for Life: A stone group with two separate enclosed empty spaces ("eyes") inside it can never be captured, because an opponent cannot occupy both eyes at once!

5. Winning & Final Scoring

When both players pass consecutively, the game ends.
Final Score = (Captured Prisoners) + (Enclosed Territory Intersections).
Whoever commands the higher total score wins! Emmy will tally the board and provide comments on your strategic play.
